Our Founder
Meet Amrit Kattel
A serial entrepreneur from Chitwan, Nepal, Amrit was born into a family of traders and businessmen. From his earliest memories, he learned the art of retail by spending time in family stores. After high school, he moved to Kathmandu, working in a shop while completing college. His ambition then took him abroad—to Japan, the UK, and finally the United States, settling in Oklahoma in 2005. Over nearly 40 years, Amrit built a regional retail empire. Today, he’s channeling that expertise—and his lifelong passion—into AK’s Local Smoke & Grow Shop, starting in Oklahoma and expanding across legal markets.
Why AK’s?
Amrit’s roots in Nepal—often seen as the birthplace of global cannabis culture—are deeply personal. In the 1960s–70s, Kathmandu was a haven for hippies drawn by its mountains, temples, and open cannabis culture centered around “Freak Street”. AK’s blends this rich legacy with Amrit’s business know‑how to build an authentic, forward‑thinking brand.
Nepal’s long history with cannabis—from Ayurvedic traditions and festival rituals (like Shivaratri) to wild Himalayan grows—shaped global cannabis culture . At AK’s, we celebrate this heritage with curated products, knowledge, and respect for the plant’s spiritual and cultural significance.
